It’s amazing to me that this PSA which first aired in 1987 (26 years ago) is still showing up in mainstream media. Even more still that it’s in a Macaroni and Cheese commercial.
As a child, I distinctly remember seeing this for the first time as an impressionable 7-year-old. At the time, my world was full of G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Voltron. Yet even then, the rage, anger, and blatant obviousness of the child’s answer all overwhelmed me. That kid was so angry and that dad was so stupid. Even now when I watch the original, I keep asking: How can that kid be so angry about being busted? How did he get so many drugs? How could that dad be so dumb? How could he do so many drugs and not look like this?
To this day, I can’t decide if it still surfaces (and resurfaces) in the mass consciousness because of the power of the advertising effort or because of the pure outrageousness of the scenario depiction. But is it really going to sell Mac n’ Cheese?
If you haven’t seen the Kraft version, view it here.
