I still groan at the thought of writing research papers. It isn’t the terribly laborious task of dragging a pencil (a what?) across a piece of paper (a who?) that haunts me. Or even the lack of spellcheck or autocorrect that meant I had to start over if there were too many mistakes. No…it was the burden of knowing that in order to even begin, I had to trudge through the dungeons of knowledge known as the Encyclopedia Britannica. Those damn, dirty Encyclopedia Brintannicas.
For those of you that grew up in the not too distant past of the early 90’s, the encyclopedias were the best of the worst when it came to accessible knowledge. Peddled by door-to-door salesmen, they were outdated almost before they were finished being printed. And boy howdy were they outrageously expensive. Talking to my dad, he conservatively estimated that our set was upwards of $1,000. That’s almost $2,000 in 2014 money!!
So next time Jimmy Wales asks you to pitch in $5, $10, or $20 to save Wikipedia, a FREE online source of near infinite information that you probably use everyday, remember those old encyclopedias and donate. You can help save the next generation.
